Pugh Prevails at The Legends with 70
Casaga Claims Crown in Boys 14 & Under Division
Temecula, Calif. – Situated 1300 feet above sea level, The Legends Golf Club in Temecula, Calif. proved a tough challenge for the field of junior golfers who took part in the 36-hole International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) tournament this past weekend.
Michael Pugh of Temecula, Calif., fired a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday to claim his first IJGT victory. Starting with a one stroke lead after the first round, Pugh knew he had to be on top of his game with three other players within four shots of the lead. He took command of the tournament posting a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine. After making birdie on hole No. 10, Pugh ended any hope of a back-nine comeback from his fellow competitors. He added a birdie on the closing hole to cement his victory and finish with a tournament total of 2-under-par 142. For the tournament, Pugh played the par-5’s at The Legends Golf Club in 5-under-par.
Pugh displayed a great all-around game in his second IJGT event. “I hit lots of fairways and got it close to the hole on my approach shots,” commented Pugh when asked about the key to his victory on the weekend.
Finishing in second place with a score of 149 was Matthew Ashley of San Jose, Calif. Evin Davis of Pasadena, Calif., placed third with a tournament total of 150.
Cade Casaga of Murrieta, Calif., rode a hot putter on his way to victory in the Boys 14 & Under Division. His final round score of 1-over-par 73 gave him a tournament total of 148 and a three shot victory over his nearest competitor. Throughout the day at The Legends Golf Club, Casaga leaned on his putter making multiple putts over 20 feet. The 11-year-old meant business on Sunday, getting off to a great start with a birdie on the opening hole. After a few bogeys, Casaga regained his composure on the back nine, shooting a 1-under-par 35 to capture the championship. On the weekend, Casaga took advantage on the par-3’s playing them in 3-under-par.
From tee to green Casaga was firing on all cylinders, but his putter allowed him to distance himself from the rest of the field. “I had a lot of one-putts and made a lot of 20-25 foot putts,” said Casaga.
Three strokes behind Casaga with a tournament total of 151, was Kendel Hodges of Temecula, Calif. Finishing in third place was Paul Gunness-Bendetti with a tournament total of 159.
In the Girls Division, Baylee Barckley of Canyon Lake, Calif., claimed her first tournament victory with rounds of 83 and 82. Barckley managed the hilly terrain at The Legends Golf Club well using smart club selection off the tee. The highlight of her round came on the 462 yard, par-5 fourth hole, where she made eagle after draining a 15 foot downhill slider.
Barckley felt comfortable all weekend on the greens with her putting stroke. “My putter saved me on most holes,” said Barckley.
Many of the competitors will look to build upon their tournament experience when the IJGT returns to action November 19-20 at Tahquitz Creek in Palm Springs, Calif.
